Consumer Group Wants Regulation For All Carriers

Several years ago, the federal government intervened and asked the CRTC to accelerate the deregulation of telephone services in Canada for the supposed benefit of consumer interests. Contrarily, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) released a report insisting that this has not been the reality at all.

Michael Janigan, who wrote the report titled “Waiting for the Dream, The Consumer Brief for Telecom Reform 2010,” has stated that Canada's telecommunications services have diminished as a result. The fact that this neither aides competition nor helps protect consumers suggests that rapid deregulation has brought about the exact opposite effect.

To remedy this, the PIAC has recommended that a new licensing regime be put in place for telecom carriers, requiring them to adhere by new codes of conduct.
