Magder: UK attempts to increase competition by banning 3-year cellphone plans

The United Kingdom has banned three-year cellphone plans, in an effort to increase competition in the wireless space.

New rules stipulate that contracts can’t last any longer than 12 months, so that consumers are no longer handcuffed to their mobile operators and don’t have to wait as long to get the latest phones.

This was seen as good news by some consumer rights groups, but others said it may result in higher charges on phone bills in order to recoup some of the money lost through discounts handset discounts.
