Montreal Gazette | Capping Net usage is step backward, CRTC told

MONTREAL - A growing group of vocal Canadians is asking the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to review the decision to allow telecommunications companies to charge smaller Internet service providers for data usage.

Many of the smaller ISPs currently offer unlimited plans or high data limits to differentiate themselves from the large providers.

In a statement, the group Openmedia.ca said allowing the large companies to impose usage caps on smaller providers is a huge step backward for Canada.

“This means the likes of Bell, Rogers and Shaw have been given the green light to determine how we pay for Internet,” the statement read. “If this decision goes unchecked, broadband is about to cost much more for Canadians.” Read more »
