On the eve of a critical new wireless spectrum auction, we have reports that the Big Three cell phone giants (who already control almost 94% of the market) are trying to trick the government into shutting independent competitors out of the market. They’re trying to block competitors from being able to use essential wireless spectrum. These giant phone companies are going so far as to use high-priced lobbyists and one is even using a fake grassroots campaign. If the Big Three succeed, they will:
In short, they will kill independent competition and be the only game in town. This scheme will lock Canada behind the rest of the world on mobile communications, cripple essential innovation, limit social progress, and drain your wallet every month. Canadians already pay some of the highest cell phone fees in the industrialized world and this is going to make it worse. We’ve heard that the Industry Minister is about to make a decision that could iron this cell phone nightmare into reality. Please join Canadians from across the country in signing this urgent petition to send him a message The government is trying to ram through an anti-Internet set of electronic surveillance laws that will invade your privacy and cost you money. The plan is to force every phone and Internet provider to surrender our personal information to "authorities" without a warrant. This bizarre legislation will create Internet surveillance that is:
If enough of us speak out now the government will have no choice but to stop this mandatory online spying scheme. Sign the petition now, and forward it to everyone you know. Take the pledge to make the switch to an indie ISP! Canada is falling behind the rest of the world on both Internet speed and pricing. Big Telecom has made record profits while they overcharge and disrespect Canadians. Those profits are then used to lobby for more control and price-gouging. The only thing big telecom companies understand is their bottom line, so let’s hit them where it hurts. Let’s get as many Canadians as possible to switch to an independent provider. It’s not possible for everyone to switch to an independent provider right now, but let’s all pledge to use an independent provider when it is possible. By pledging to make the switch, you’ll send a clear message to policy-makers that Canadians want independent choices for Internet service. Make a pledge and spread the word!
The CRTC is letting your Internet Service Provider put a meter on the Internet! Bell Canada and other big telecom companies can freely impose usage-based billing on independent Internet Service Providers (indie ISPs) and YOU. Big Telecom companies are obviously trying to gouge consumers, control the Internet market, and ensure that consumers continue to subscribe to their television services. This means we're looking at a future where ISPs will charge per byte, the way they do with smart phones. If we allow this to happen Canadians will have no choice but to pay more for less Internet. This will crush innovative services, Canada's digital competitiveness, and your wallet. We need to stand up for the Internet. Sign the Stop The Meter petition! *Choose from of the options below or do all three! Canada needs a citizen-centric digital strategy. Big phone and cable companies are already hard at work lobbying the new Conservative Government for further price-gouging and control. To combat this, OpenMedia.ca has put forth a well-researched report and citizen-centered action plan for a gouge-free, open, and affordable Internet. The plan is based on widely held Canadian principles of accessibility, choice, diversity, innovation, and openness. We’ve done our homework. Now, as many people as possible need to send this plan to local MPs and Prime Minister Stephen Harper. We have a unique opportunity to stop price-gouging. Set the record straight. Send a copy of our report to your MP and Stephen Harper! |
