Stop The Cell Phone Squeeze

Stop the squeeze!

The Big Three cell phone giants have a plan for Canada:

  1. Squeeze independent providers out of the cell phone market.
  2. Squeeze more money out of your wallet every single month through new fees on your bill.
  3. Squeeze Canadians into tighter longer term contracts with disrespectful customer service.

This scheme will lock Canada behind the rest of the world on mobile communications, cripple innovation, and drain your wallet every month. Canadians already pay some of the highest cell phone fees in the industrialized world and this is going to make it much worse1.

How?

The Big Three cell phone giants (who already control almost 94% of the market) are lobbying the government to block smaller independent cell phone providers from using the wireless spectrum required to deliver services. These giant phone companies are going so far as to use high-priced lobbyists and one is even using a fake grassroots campaign2.

The Industry Minister will make a decision on this in the coming days. Let's raise a massive national call to stop this big telecom price-gouging scheme.

Footnotes:
[1] In 2009, an OECD study found that Canadians pay some of the highest prices for mobile phone calls in the industrialized world. This was corroborated by a 2010 report from the New America Foundation. More recently, another study found that Canada has the highest roaming fees in the industrialized world.

[2] Rogers has a campaign that purports to be in the interest of customer service when it is clearly about limiting their independent competitors. Find our coverage of that campaign here.
